Whiskers of Wisdom

Caring for your pet means more than treating problems as they arise. Preventive healthcare is the most important component of healthcare in all life stages. At ten years for cats and 8 years for dogs most pets are considered seniors. At this life stage changes in physical condition and behavior inevitably occur. With many common aging changes, we can make life easier for your pet, with appropriately chosen diagnostic tests and therapy.

Most pet owners are familiar with common aging changes such as; stiff or slower movements, and sensory (sight/hearing) loss. More difficult to recognize are sometimes subtle changes associated with common ailments.

Please notify your doctor if you notice any of the following:

  • Weight gain or loss

  • Skin or Coat changes

  • Changes in urination

  • Changes in bowel movements

  • Changes in thirst or appetite

  • Bad Breath

  • Frequent vomiting

  • Trouble seeing or hearing

  • Drinking from different sources

  • Decreased activity

  • Hiding

  • Decreased interactions with toys

  • Change in grooming habits

  • Sleep/wake cycle disruptions

When the doctor learns that any of these changes have occurred, appropriate testing can be done and therapy can be provided to cure or control the ailment, offering the best quality of life possible for your pet.

The typical tests doctors run on our senior patients include a chemistry panel, CBC, and urinalysis. These tests identify many common conditions associated with the symptoms we have listed. These tests can assure your pet is healthy, and provide a baseline to compare future test results against. We offer these tests in our Whiskers of Wisdom package at a deeply discounted rate if they are done at the same time as your pet’s yearly exam. All new members of our program receive a gift and a certificate of enrollment. Please call us anytime if you have any questions or are ready to schedule an appointment 410-633-8808.
